-
Drugs will stay in the hair shaft until it either grows out or is cut off.
-
Hair testing requires approximately 120-200 head hairs (the thickness of a Sharpie) or body hair - the size of a large cotton ball.
-
Hair testing can be performed on hair from weeks, months, or years back, depending on the hair, the time frame selected, or the location where the specimen was collected.
-
Head hair can be broken down or segmented into different time frames - whereas body hair or nail testing cannot.
-
Head hair - every 1/2 inch equals approximately 1 month. The standard detection time for a head hair test is approximately 90 days - Sample time frames for standard collections will start approximately 14 days before the collection date and test back approximately 90 days. Hair is cut at the scalp and not pulled from the root. It takes approximately 10-14 days for any drug use to get into a person's hair or nails. It must work through the body and into the hair shaft or nail bed. When hoping to achieve a Negative result, we recommend that you wait at least 2 weeks + 90 days from the date of last drug usage before having a hair sample collected for testing.
-
Body hair constantly grows and falls out at different rates - within 6-12 months. That is why you do not have body hair cut or trimmed like head hair.
-
The standard detection time for body hair is approximately 6-12 months.
-
Samples that test positive in the screening process will move to Confirmation testing via GC/MS &/or LC/MS/MS. It is important to note that quantitative values cannot be used to determine the time, dosage, or frequency of drug use.
-
Confirmation methods: LC/MS/MS &/or GC/MS. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) offers specific advantages over gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), such as identifying and measuring a broader range of compounds with minimal sample preparation.
-

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LEVELS
The level should not be used to determine how much a donor used or was exposed to a drug:
Levels in hair tests can't determine the amount or frequency of use. Higher levels are a good indication of use history but could also be a one-time use of a lot. UV light and hair treatments only seem to affect THC or other acidic drugs. Dark hair does retain drugs more easily.
When testing any reservoir matrix, it is impractical to back-track to determine time, dosage or frequency. There are too many variables involved. The reported values (the numbers) have no therapeutic or clinical value. You cannot use the number to estimate how much the donor used or to what extent the donor was exposed.
